Tips for Maintaining Healthy Dye/Coloured Natural Hair

Colour-treated natural hair

Dying your healthy natural hair is just fine as long as you're prepared to take care of your hair.I have managed to maintain healthy colour-treated hair and have a few suggestions for maintaining healthy dyed natural hair at home. You must be careful about replenishing the protein that permanent colour usually breaks down and moisturise regularly to keep your hair from becoming brittle and breaking.

Coloured Natural Hair
For healthy colour-treated hair, I suggest:

  1. don't do a permanent colour when a semi-permanent will do. I suggest semi-permanent dyes for covering up greys. Semi-permanent colours are usually more gentle than permanent colours.
  2. weekly deep conditioning treatments. Never skip a treatment.
  3. using moisturising shampoos.
  4. alternating between light protein (like Aphogee 2 Minute Reconstructor) and a moisture condition of your choice each week.
  5. moisturising with a water based leave-in and sealing in the moisture with coconut oil every night.
  6. always sleeping with a satin bonnet to protect your more fragile coloured hair.
  7. protecting your hair from chlorine by wetting hair and applying a leave-in and shower cap before taking a dip.
  8. not overlapping your touch-up on your previously dyed hair if you can help it. It's just as how you wouldn't overlap a relaxer. Overlapping can cause damage to previously dyed hair. This is especially so for a permanent colour.
  9. avoiding using heat. Heat dries out your hair and dyed hair tends to get dry easily. Try roller sets and wrapping the get the curls you desire. And, of course, always use a heat protectant.

How to Create & Style Loose Twists on Natural Hair

Loose twists on natural hair are probably my favourite and most practical style on natural hair. Put your hair in loose twists and style them in updos just like loose hair without worrying about your naturally kinky hair getting tangled and matted. Check out the style by askpRoy below.

She has shaved the sides of her hair almost totally off but the loose twists still offer her a lot or styling versatility.

Tips for Longer Lasting Two Strand Twists on Children

If your active daughter has you redoing her two strand twists in the middle of the week, try this technique to help her twists last throughout the week and maybe even longer.

Plait the roots of her natural hair for up to an inch before beginning to twist. This ensures that her roots are tight and secure. It takes a little bit longer to remove, but it's worth it if you don't have to be redoing her hair in the middle of the week because it's untildy.

See how this method of twisting was done in the video below.

A Protective Natural Hairstyling Tip

Braids Protective Style

TRUE or FALSE?
Braids are the ultimate protective style.
FALSE.

Tip!
Keep your hair in updas and away from your collar and neck to maximise the benefits of using braids as a protective style.

If you have shoulder length or longer hair that is in braids, if your wear your braids down, the sweat from your neck in the summer or during exercise can get into your braid causing significant dryness. Also, hair may still be rubbing against your cotton blouses and sweaters, eating up moisture from your hair.

Remember!
Even if you are wearing extensions, your hair is wrapped into your braid. As such, treat your braids like your regular hair. Moisturise, seal and wear your hair up and away from your neck and clothing to keep  your natural hair protected.

How To Achieve a Twist-out on Short Natural Hair

Step 1
Start with damp, clean, product free hair.
Remember this! Setting twist-outs on damp hair gives more defined results.

Step 2
Apply a  moisturiser and then oil to moisturise and seal in the moisture applied to the hair.

Step 3
Section your hair and detangle with a wide tooth come. Ensure that the section is detangled.

Step 4
Take small to medium sized sections. You can part with your fingers. Ensure that the section is detangled.

Step 5
Two strand twist the section trying to keep the same two sections all the way to the end. Coil the ends around your fingers to seal the end or wrap the twist on a perm rod for added curl and texture.

Step 6
Allow hair to fully dry. If you don't,  you may end up with a fuzzy poof-ball of a style.

Step 7
Add a light hair oil  like coconut oil to your hair then to your fingers then gently unravel the twists. Reapply oil as needed. The oil on your fingertips and the gentle separation of the twists help to minimize frizz.

You're done!
