Bantu Knots, commonly known as Chiney Bumps in Jamaica, are a well known method for stretching natural hair. As a child, I went through the ritual of getting my hair washed on Saturday mornings then being sent outside to play in the sun while my Bantu Knots dried. A lot of people do not know how to use this method for stretching or even styling here. Keep reading to find out more.

Tips for Longer Lasting Two Strand Twists on Children

If your active daughter has you redoing her two strand twists in the middle of the week, try this technique to help her twists last throughout the week and maybe even longer.

Plait the roots of her natural hair for up to an inch before beginning to twist. This ensures that her roots are tight and secure. It takes a little bit longer to remove, but it's worth it if you don't have to be redoing her hair in the middle of the week because it's untildy.

How To Achieve a Twist-out on Short Natural Hair

Step 1
Start with damp, clean, product free hair.
Remember this! Setting twist-outs on damp hair gives more defined results.

Step 2
Apply a  moisturiser and then oil to moisturise and seal in the moisture applied to the hair.

Step 3
Section your hair and detangle with a wide tooth come. Ensure that the section is detangled.

Step 4
Take small to medium sized sections. You can part with your fingers. Ensure that the section is detangled.

Step 5
Two strand twist the section trying to keep the same two sections all the way to the end. Coil the ends around your fingers to seal the end or wrap the twist on a perm rod for added curl and texture.

Step 6
Allow hair to fully dry. If you don't,  you may end up with a fuzzy poof-ball of a style.

Step 7
Add a light hair oil  like coconut oil to your hair then to your fingers then gently unravel the twists. Reapply oil as needed. The oil on your fingertips and the gentle separation of the twists help to minimize frizz.

What are Bhantu Knots | How to Do Bhantu Knots

Bhantu Knots/Chiney Bumps

Bhantu Knots, also known as Chiney Bumps are the process of twisting the hair then rolling it unto itself into what look like a big bump or knot. (See video at the end of this post).  There are two main methods.

Bhanty Knots or Chiney Bumps

Method 1: Two strand twist the hair then roll it onto itself.

(LOOSE NATURAL HAIR VERSION)

Method 2:  Twist the hair into a roll then roll it unto itself.

(Traditional Method)

Uses of Bhantu Knots

People generally use bhantu knots for:

• stretching natural hair.
• as a drying method that keeps hair out of the way while it dries. 
• as a hairstyle.
• as a way of setting the hair to later release the curls produced. That style is called a bhantu knot-out.
