How to Create the Perfect Braid-out on Natural Hair

Braid-out on Natural Type 3 Curly Hair – Source

Braid-outs are one of the most popular hairstyles of the 21st century for black women with both relaxed and natural hair. If you have natural hair and desire a beautiful braid-out, try the following method for a perfect braid-out.

You Will Need:
  1. Hair oil (preferably a light oil like extra virgin coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil)
  2. Holding product or moisturiser (like Eco Styler Gel or Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream)
  3. Detangling product like a wide tooth comb or detangling brush.

Tip!

A holding product will give a more defined braid-out than a moisturiser.

Technique

Start with clean or freshly washed product-free and damp hair.

    Step 1
Detangle the hair and section it into four manageable sections. Adjust section sizes if your hair is short.

    Step 2
Spritz the section of hair if it is dry then add oil to seal in the moisture and give the hair some slip to make it easier to detangle.

    Step 3
Detangle the section immediately with a wide-tooth comb or your tool of choice.

    Step 4
Split the section into two or three parts and add your holding products or moisturiser.

    Step 5
    Plait each section.

    Step 6
Repeat steps 2-5 on each section of hair hair. Remember to part your hair and plait your hair in the direction that you want to style to lay. So, part your hair to the side if you want a side part.

    Step 7
Allow your hair to fully dry. If you don't, it will totally frizz up and look like a regular Afro.

    Step 8
Apply oil to your fingertips and remove each braid carefully to prevent frizzing.

Check out the demonstrations of braid-outs below.

    Remember!
